Prepare Your AC for Spring

Writer • Mar 03, 2021

It is difficult to believe, but spring is just around the corner! The warmer temperatures will be a relief, but your HVAC maintenance needs will change. Your AC unit has likely sat through snow and rain and needs a little attention before you call for AC maintenance in Portage, MI. Here are four things you can do today to prepare your AC for spring:

  • Start cleaning: Winter wreaks havoc on all outdoor units, and now is the time to start cleaning them off. Remove leaves and branches, and wipe off the mud. Be careful if any sticks or branches are stuck in the vents—if you quickly yank them out, you risk damaging the unit. If there is any yard debris or other clutter around the unit, pick it up and give your AC plenty of clearance. Once you remove larger debris, use your vacuum cleaner to remove dirt from the fins, along with any smaller particles that may affect efficiency. After cleaning the unit, move on to your ductwork. We spend most of our time indoors in winter, and that means more dust, allergens and dirt in the ductwork. Schedule an inspection or cleaning to make sure it works well and is not reintroducing pollutants to your home.
  • Do a trial run: You want to find problems now, not when it’s over 90 degrees and your home is sweltering! A trial run helps you determine if your AC unit survived winter conditions or if you need to call us in for AC service. Once the unit and ductwork are clean, turn it on and run it for 30 to 60 minutes. Check for weird noises, odors or a lack of airflow. If anything seems off, call for an assessment and make sure your AC is safe to run. But if everything seems to be going well, expect to enjoy a cooler home this summer!
  • Change filters: Even if you swear you changed the filter when fall ended, do it again anyway. The filter is an essential part that ensures good airflow and quality. If it was damaged during the winter, it can bring particles into your home or even cause your AC to fail. You can never change your filter too often if efficient cooling and good air quality are your goals!
  • Schedule regular maintenance: Your AC is about to face yet another demanding summer, and you need to keep it working well. Regular maintenance is a bit part of that, and now is a good time to schedule this appointment. Once temperatures increase, there is a demand for AC services, and you may have to wait for a while. But if you schedule this service now, your AC will be ready once spring begins.
